Description |
This object is a forage cap with a wool upper, Vulcan fibre visor and headband support, and leather chinstrap. The upper is black wool with a red wool band 5.5cm in width that wraps around the circumference of the hat. The upper is shaped with a high peak and rounded sides that extend and droop slightly over the red wool band on the left, right, and back sides of the cap. Affixed to the front of the red wool band and the black wool of the peak is a metal support for a cap badge. The support is held in place by a metal loop on the top and sewn in place by thick brown thread on the bottom. The interior of the cap has a brown tan leather sweatband, as well as wool and celluloid lining. The leather sweatband is stamped with "REAL ROAM LEATHER" on the left side. Affixed to the top of the back of the interior sweatband is a small bow tied from ribbon and attached by thread. This is likely designed to cover the seam visible on the back of the interior sweatband. The interior of the dome of the cap has a brown sheer celluloid liner sewn over the primary felted wool of the cap. Beneath this liner is a label that has been attached to the dome of the cap which reads "THOMAS & STONE, / HAT & CAP MAKERS, / 97, JERMYN STREET, / ST JAMES’S, / LONDON,S.W.I". Around the text on this label is the image of a braided rope in a looping pattern with the initials "TS" is in the top centre loop above the framing rope design. The Vulcan fibre visor is black and is rimmed with a glossy black material, possibly patent leather. The visor has a green underside. The leather chinstrap is a glossy black with two slider loops that have been positioned towards either end of the leather strap. The chinstrap is held in place by two brass buttons, affixed to the left and right sides of the cap body, approximately 3cm past where the end of the visor meets the wool. Both of the buttons feature the RCR cypher, "VRI", beneath a crown. Included with the cap is a clear plastic bag which reads "Thomas & Stone / SERVICE CAP MAKERS / 97 JERMYN STREET, LONDON, S.W.1. / Telephone: WHItehall 8216". The bag is 52cm by 39cm. |
