Description |
This piece is a black and grey composite print that features seven sketched vignettes of OPs and checkpoints in Cyprus. Clockwise from the upper right corner the sketches are as follows: O.P. Mojave, O.P. School, Checkpoint Foxtrot, O.P. Lizard, O.P. Vineyard, and O.P. Banff. In the centre there is a sketch of an unidentified location as seen through a window in a stone wall. In the centre of the top portion of the page is a section of text which reads "B Coy / 3 PPCLI / Cyprus / April - October ā80". The sketch of O.P. Mojave is comprised of a sketch of the exterior of the OP with a grassy stretch surrounding the walls. The building is shown at an angle with the a corner entrance visible in the foreground. The walls of the structure feature 6 windows and 2 entry ways. Within the structure is an elevated observation tower with "UN" written on both visible walls. On the left side of the tower there is a sign which reads "L". On the right side of the tower there is a flag flying from a flag post. The flag reads "RCR". The tower has a tented roof, under which two figures stand watch. The sketch of OP School depicts the structure on a side angle, showing the layout to be in an āLā shape. The structure itself is comprised of two stories with an observation station on the roof of the second story. The observation station is made up of a small square building with large windows, and an open sided shade cover. On the railing surrounding the observation station there is a flag with what appears to be the UN logo on it. There are two figures shown to be on top of the second story, with one standing near the observation station railing and the other standing further behind. The second story features a balcony and 5 windows. The first story features 3 windows. On the right side of the structure there is a set of stairs leading to the second story entrance from the ground level. Above the entrance there is a sign panel which reads "C18". The sketch of Checkpoint Foxtrot depicts a small rectangular structure with two raised striped gate bars, one on either side of the structure. The structure has a textured metal panel roof, two windows, and a door. The gate bars each feature a circular sign attached midway on the length of the bar. The signs both depict triangle symbols. In the foreground of the sketch there is a standing sign with a circular face which depicts a triangle symbol. Behind the sign are two barrel drums. Behind the checkpoint structure is a swatch of tall grass. Unlike the other structure sketches on this print, there are no humans depicted. The sketch of OP Lizard depicts a small rectangular wooden structure with a striped gate bar that is down. The roof of the structure is made of a textured metal panel which extends to create an awning on there left side. In front of the structure are three drum barrels and a standing sign post with a circular sign attached. The right side of the structure features a fence that is reinforced with razor wire. Above the structure are two poles, one of which is flying a flag with an illegible design. Standing behind the bar gate is a man dressed in uniform. The sketch of OP Vineyard depicts a building that is at least two stories tall and likely made of concrete or stone. The second story of the building is shown to be accessible via a staircase that is bordered by a metal railing. The second story has a large corner windowpane and a smaller window pane on the middle of the front facing wall. On the far left of the front of the building is a sign which reads "UN". The roof of the building is depicted as being used for observation as there is a metal fence surrounding the edges and a metal shade roof on the right side of the roof. There are three flag posts on then roof, two of which are flying flags with illegible designs. Towards the back of the left side of the roof there is a smaller observation station structure with a peaked roof. In front of the structure there is a man in uniform standing. Slightly behind and to the right side of the roof stands another man in uniform. The sketch of OP Banff depicts a small square structure flying a UN flag situated amongst a field of grass. The structure features wrap around windows on the upper half and sits upon a brick or stone foundation. In front of the structure stand two men in uniform, one of which appears to be looking through binoculars. The on the lower half of the front of the structure "UN" is written in large bold letters. The centre sketch depicts the view from inside a structure that is made of stone or brick looking out onto a landscape of several structures and a mountainous range. The window from which the scene is shown is jagged around the edges and features twisted metal rods protruding from the bottom ledge and sides of the window. On two of the structures in the background flags are being flown, with the closer flag featuring a white cross design over a dark field. The flag further behind features an illegible design. |
