Feather Bonnet and Hackle |
Description |
A: Feather Bonnet made of black ostrich feathers arranged over a domed cage. This bonnet uses 4 ostrich feather tails, with the loose ends draped onto the wearer's right side. The ends of the tails are tapered short in the front and long in the back. The cage is made of metal wire and covered in black fabric. This cage is attached to an adjustable headband. The band is red and white chequered knit, with the the lower edge and inside bound in black velvet. RCR cap badge atop a black ribbon cockade on the front left side. The pipers' cap badge is modeled after the Canadian Guards badge and consists of the regimental cap badge encircled by a belt inscribed with the name of the regiment. Under the badge/cockade, there is a ribbon covered slot for the hackle/plume to be inserted. There is another piece of black ribbon on the back of the band with a folded loop and two notched tails. There is a buckle underneath the ribbons to adjust the headband. Inside: The inside of the red and white band is stiffened, possibly with heavy cardstock or flexible plastic material. There is a brown leather hat band sewn onto a piece of black twill tape, which was then sewn to the inside of the velvet binding. The name "Izatt" is inscribed on the leather band in the front. On the right side of the leather band, a piece of red duct tape has been placed and written on in marker (inscription largely illegible). The bonnet is lined with an adjustable inner cap with two drawstring closures. The cap is made of a red material with matching red ribbons in the drawstring channels. The cap is sewn onto the upper edge of the leather hat band. Area above the lining cap is the inside of the fabric covered cage. There is an opening in the covering for the tails of the feathers to be tucked for storage. B: Tall hackle plume made with two colours of feathers, blue on the top and yellow on the bottom. The base of the hackle is wrapped in brown material. A white dowel provides the structure of the hackle. There is a loop of thin cord with a metal ring attached to the top of the hackle through a hole drilled in the dowel. |
