The top of the lid has an oblong depression with a ribbed/textured surface used to light a match (striker bar). The lid is hinged on one of the short sides for easy opening and closing. Matches would be stored inside this compartment. The bottom of the match case has a second, smaller compartment that is hinged along the back (long) side. The bottom of the compartment has a circular opening and swivel operated cigar cutter blade. The cut end of the cigar is caught inside the small compartment. Reverse exterior has an oval opening with a stamped tin plate advertising the manufacturer/seller of the object. The company listed, "A. Friedman & Co." had at least 2 locations in Oakland, CA, USA, including a wholesale location for consumers and retailers. They specialized in cigars, other tobacco products and smoking articles. |
