Oval Cardboard Hatbox with Lid |
Description |
A hatbox with a lift away-lid. The box is plain off-white cardboard that has been reinforced around the lid edges with cloth tape. Written on the left side wall of the box is "467". Attached to the right side wall of the box is a customs declaration sheet originating at a Post Office of Great Britain in London, S.W. The customs declaration was originally pasted over the body and lid of the hatbox, but has been cut to allow the lid to open. The customs declaration is routed to Canada and was signed by a stamp which reads "WALTER BARNARD AND SON, LTD. / JERMYN STREET. LONDON, S.W.1." The top panel of the lid of the box is affixed by cloth tape to the side edge of the lid. Attached to the lid is a large piece of paper with a black rectangular border printed on the page. At the top of this page, within the printed border is stylized printed text that reads "TELEPHONE - WHITEHALL 8216 / Walter Barnard & Son, / HAT AND CAP MANUFACTURERS, Ltd. / 97, Jermyn Street, / BY APPOINTMENT. / London, S.W.1" Above the portion of text that says "BY APPOINTMENT." is a depiction of the Prince of Wales's feathers badge. Beneath the printed text on this attached paper is a thin dividing line. Below this line is handwritten text that reads: "LT JST Kiernan RCR / RSS of 1 / Camp Borden / Ontario / Canada / 647 / 3.10". Beneath the printed border at the bottom of the attached paper is text that reads "AIR MAIL". In addition to the attached paper, the box lid has several postage stamps and customs tags both stuck on with adhesive and stamped with ink. From top to bottom, left to right, the stamps and tags are as follows: An 8cm by 4.5cm white rectangle tag which reads "EXPORTED FREE OF PURCHASE TAX BY POST / NOTE."" - After this parcel/packet has been accepted at the Post Office it must be forwarded to the proper Office of Exchange and may in no circumstances be returned to the sender, either from the Office of Posting or from any intermediate office. / P.T. 44 See F2281 (May, 1954". The final words of the last line are lost as the tag had been torn, obscuring the text. A 4cm by 2.5cm postage stamp depicting a front visual of a palace on the left and a young Queen Elizabeth on the right. "POSTAGE €" is printed on the bottom of the stamp, and the price of the stamp has been lost as the bottom right corner was ripped. A 6cm by 2.5cm postage stamp depicting a castle with a body of water in from on the left side and a portrait of young Queen Elizabeth on the right side. "POSTAGE 2" is printed on the bottom of the stamp, though the full price value is obscured by a tear in the stamps bottom right corner. An ink stamped postage marking approximately 7.5cm by 4cm in size, placed over the two previous postage stamps. This ink stamp is partially obscured on the right side, with printed text reading "11 SEG / 0 00 5 / j" visible. The right side of the text has been lost. An 8.2cm by 1.8cm blue tag featuring white printed text that reads "BY AIR MAIL BY AIR MAIL / PAR AVION PAR AVION". Above each section of text is a black and white logo depicting a set of stylized wings.
