Prayer Book |
Scope & Content |
A leatherbound Common Prayer book that was carried by Pte. Kenneth G. Johnston during the South African War. The cover contains the text: "Common Prayer" at the top, with a Christian cross in the centre, and "Hymns A&M." at the bottom. In the centre of the prayer book is an inscription that was made by Pte. Johnston. It states that the prayer book was given to him by his father upon leaving for special service with The RCR in South Africa. He carried it with him through a variety of operations the Regiment took part in. He states that the prayer book became waterloffed as he struggled to wade accross the Modder River on the 18th February, 1900 just prior to the Battle of Paardeberg. There is also an inscription by Pte. Johnston at the back of the prayer book with similar information. |
